Oct. 23 is my birthday and in 2009 I decided to do something a little bit different to surprise my dad.
I had always joked around with my own children when it came to their birthdays. I would tell them, " Hey, it's your birthday, what are you going to get me?" They would in turn give me a surprised, weird look.
I would then say, "You know that Mom and I are your parents, the reason you are here. We deserve a nice gift from you because you were born. Aren't you happy you were born?"
The weird glares would continue, but I would pay it no mind. I would then begin to rattle off some of my birthday wish list items. "I want a new tie, a set of tires, a new fishing pole...oh, yeah, a BMW 328i hardtop convertible too!"
Well, needless to say, I haven't gotten anything from them for their birthdays... yet. But that doesn't keep me from sending a card to my dad. So I did.
In 2009, I sent a birthday greeting card on my birthday to my dad at his work place. The inside message was specific to one, fun filled kite flying day that we had when I was growing up. It was a great memory for both of us.
When my dad recieved the card, he called me that night, overjoyed! "Son, this is so neat!' he shouted. "I've shown this card to everybody in the office. They thought it was neat too. My boy sent me a card on his birthday! Thank you son."
If my father could feel such happiness from a single card, maybe other people could feel the same way. This experience lead me to create the On My Birthday cards.
The 3rd experience...
