I attended a funeral service of a co-worker's grandmother in a small town in Georgia. This grandmother was one of the pillars of her community, having earned great honor and respect among her family and friends.
Before attending her funeral services, I went to the local store to pick up a nice greeting card. I was looking for a card that had just the right elements of hope, comfort, and happiness for the family, specifically for my friend. I was unsurprisingly disappointed.
I couldn't find a card that had just the right words.
So, I just picked a "sympathy" card from the bunch.
At the service, the feeling was one of joy, happiness and praise as this was a celebration of a grandmother who lived her life to the fullest extent. This funeral service was really, as one family member put it, a "home-going" service.
"Grandmother wouldn't want us to spend one minute being sad, so, let's not start now!", said one of the family members. The service was great.
I began to think about my greeting card that I purchased for my friend. I really wanted to take back my inappropriate sympathy card. It didn't fit! My card would have made her sad and depressed, a total opposite of the feelings present at the service.
This defining experience lead me to the creation of the Home Going Cards.
